The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression on Saturday and develop into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 26.

According to the IMD’s latest update, issued on October 24, the weather system was located over the east-central Bay of Bengal at 5:30 AM. It is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression on October 25 before developing into a cyclonic storm the following morning.

The system is likely to continue moving in a west-northwestward direction and approach the west-central Bay of Bengal near the Andhra Pradesh coast around the morning of October 28.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said the system could bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several eastern and central parts of the country.

According to the forecast, coastal Odisha is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places on October 27, while isolated heavy rainfall is expected over coastal West Bengal.

On October 28, North Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places. The IMD has also warned of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 centimetres in 24 hours in parts of the region.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over West Bengal on October 28. Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar may experience isolated heavy rainfall on October 28 and 29.

Authorities Advised to Take Precautionary Measures

The IMD said the developing weather system could affect coastal areas through rainfall and squally winds. It is monitoring the system and will issue further updates as the situation evolves.

Mohapatra urged maritime and operational authorities to initiate preparedness measures in view of the impending cyclone.

He specifically called on fishing communities, boat operators, shipping services, offshore and onshore industries, and port authorities to take necessary precautionary action.
