Brazilian football legend Romario Faria has made a shocking return to professional football at the age of 58. Having retired from the sport in 2009, Romario’s comeback has surprised fans around the globe.

The 58-year-old helped Brazil lift the World Cup back in 1994, bagging the Golden Ball award after scoring five goals in the tournament. He also played for the likes of Barcelona, PSV Eindhoven, Flamengo and Vasco de Gama during his career, having played his last competitive match 15 years ago.

Throughout his illustrious career, the Brazilian icon scored an impressive tally of over 1000 goals, including those scored in friendly matches.

Romario has officially registered as a player for America Football Club. He is presently the president of America Football Club and has registered himself as a player, with Rio de Janeiro’s football federation approving the move.

Despite his legendary status, Romario has opted to earn a minimum wage from his return to football, generously donating all proceeds to charity.

Taking to his official Instagram account, Romario clarified that he does not intend to compete in the championship but rather to fulfill a personal aspiration of playing alongside his son.

America Football Club is currently competing in the second division of Brazil’s Campeonato Carioca. Romario’s presence promises to add a new dimension of excitement and inspiration, as his side gears up for a new season which is scheduled to kick off on May 18.
