The fourth edition of the Snow Marathon Lahaul, Asia’s only and the world’s highest snow marathon held at an altitude of 11,000 feet, is set to take place on March 23.

The event will be hosted in Sissu, located in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, officials announced on Monday.

This one-of-a-kind marathon challenges long-distance and ultra-runners to compete under extreme conditions. This year, over 300 participants from across the country will compete in four categories: 42 km (Full Marathon), 21 km (Half Marathon), 10 km, and 5 km.

A key highlight of the event is its role in enhancing India’s global representation in high-altitude snow marathons, attracting top endurance athletes and adventure enthusiasts.

The marathon has witnessed strong participation from the Indian Army and the Indian Navy in past editions. This year, the Indian Air Force Adventure Team is joining with 20 runners, taking on the demanding challenge.

Additionally, the Indian Army will field 25 elite runners, including athletes from the Ladakh Scouts, Dogra, and Kumaon Regiments. Paramilitary forces such as the ITBP and the SSB will also compete alongside elite runners and outdoor athletes.

Speaking about the event, Col (retd) Arun Natrajan, the event organizer, emphasized the environmental significance of the marathon.

“Lahaul’s winter landscape offers a thrilling experience for runners and adventurers. However, the melting glaciers and diminishing snowfall are urgent concerns. We hope this event raises awareness about the need for immediate action to protect our fragile environment,” Col Natrajan stated.

High-altitude trainer Sachin Sharma described the race as a truly unique experience for outdoor and endurance runners.

“It’s the only race in India that combines the challenge of running on snow with the opportunity to engage with the region’s rich culture and traditions,” he noted.

Event founder Gaurav Schimar also underlined the marathon’s environmental message.

“While the race caters to extreme outdoor sports enthusiasts, its core purpose is to highlight the ecological challenges faced by the Himalayas and the Trans-Himalayan region,” he said.
