German Ambassador to India and Bhutan, Dr. Philipp Ackermann, highlighted the growing academic partnership between the two countries, emphasizing that nearly 50,000 Indian students currently study in Germany, making it the largest group of foreign students in the country.

Dr. Ackermann made these remarks during an event in the national capital marking the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)’s 65th anniversary in India and its century-long commitment to fostering international academic collaboration. This event underscored the increasingly dynamic academic exchange between the nations.

“The Indo-German partnership in science and education is stronger than ever. It is one of the foundational elements of our bilateral ties,” Dr. Ackermann stated, praising the robust academic cooperation that has seen remarkable growth in recent years. He further noted that Indian scientists have made significant contributions to Germany’s research landscape, driving innovation with their expertise and discoveries.

As India looks to further deepen its academic ties with Germany, more than 80 German universities and research institutions are set to participate in initiatives aimed at enhancing both academic and research partnerships. This initiative comes at a time when India’s academic and research infrastructure is rapidly expanding, creating new opportunities for bilateral collaboration.

DAAD also unveiled a strategy paper that outlines its approach to strengthening academic cooperation with India. The paper emphasizes the vast potential for scientific and academic exchange between the two countries and provides actionable recommendations for German universities to foster closer ties with India.

Prof. Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, President of DAAD, stressed the growing importance of academic cooperation with India, particularly in the context of global geopolitical shifts. “India is quickly becoming a global leader in science and innovation. The dynamic development of India’s higher education and research sectors offers immense opportunities for collaboration in areas ranging from student mobility to research partnerships and the recruitment of skilled labor,” Mukherjee said.
