Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the country’s coal production surpassing the 1 billion tonne mark as a proud moment and a historic milestone

“A proud moment for India! Crossing the monumental milestone of 1 billion tonnes of coal production is a remarkable achievement, highlighting our commitment to energy security, economic growth, and self-reliance,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G Kishan Reddy, also shared the milestone on X, confirming that India has reached this significant production level. He emphasized that the country’s use of cutting-edge technologies and efficient mining methods has not only increased coal production but also ensured sustainable and responsible mining practices.

“India has crossed a monumental 1 billion tonnes of coal production! With cutting-edge technologies and efficient methods, we’ve not only increased production but also ensured sustainable and responsible mining,” Reddy said in his post.

The Minister further pointed out that this achievement would help meet the country’s growing energy demands, drive economic growth, and contribute to a brighter future for every Indian under the visionary leadership of PM Modi.

In response to the minister’s post, PM Modi expressed his appreciation, noting that this feat also reflects the dedication and hard work of all those associated with the coal sector.

Earlier this week, the Central Government set a target to supply 906.1 million tonnes of coal to the power sector for the financial year 2025-26. The Ministry of Coal presented this plan to Parliament after receiving a request from the Ministry of Power regarding coal requirements for the next fiscal year.

As of March 10, 2025, India has an ample coal supply to meet its energy demands. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), coal-based power plants held a stock of 53.49 MT, marking a 20.2% increase from the 44.51 MT recorded on the same day in 2024.
