The Central government has officially designated the Darranga land check post in Assam’s Tamulpur district as an authorized Immigration Check Post, marking a significant advancement for cross-border travel and regional connectivity. This designation permits entry into and exit from India for all passengers holding valid travel documents, under sub-rule (b) of rule 3 of the Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 1950.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued a notification on Friday, specifying that the designation is effective immediately. Additionally, the Chief Immigration Officer of the Bureau of Immigration will serve as the ‘Civil Authority’ at the Darranga Land Immigration Check Post, starting November 1, 2024, as per sub-clause (2) of Clause 2 of the Foreigners Order, 1948. This role is expected to facilitate more streamlined immigration processes and bolster border management in the region.

Located near the international border, the Darranga check post has long served as a critical transit point for trade and travel, particularly given Assam’s proximity to neighboring Bhutan and Bangladesh. The establishment of a formal immigration checkpoint aligns with India’s broader strategy to strengthen border security, regulate immigration, and enhance infrastructure at key cross-border transit points.
